FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:

WHAT KIND OF FOOD COLORING IS BEST TO USE?

I’m a big fan of the gel type of food coloring. It gives a deeper coloring to these fudgy brownies, and you don’t need to use as much.

A great recipe should have great ingredients and that gel food coloring is my go-to.

ANY ADDITIONS?

Everyone will go crazy over these Red Velvet Brownies! I know my whole family does, we make them every Valentine’s Day or even around Christmas, but there isn’t a day that isn’t good for these!

  • Scoop of vanilla ice cream on top for a decadent dessert
  • Chocolate ganache spread over the kisses for an extra chocolatey layer
  • Chopped Oreos mixed into the batter for more cookies and cream flavor
  • A cream cheese layer swirled into the brownie batter for a creamy twist
  • Chocolate sauce drizzled on top before serving for a stunning presentation
  • Crushed cookies sprinkled over the melted kisses for added texture
  • Hershey’s cookies incorporated into the batter for a different chocolate taste
  • Cream buttercream frosting applied after cooling for a sweet and soft topping
  • Double batch of the recipe for bigger gatherings or extra treats for later

ANY SUBSTITUTIONS?

You bet! This cookies and cream brownies recipe can certainly stand a little bit of change!

  • White chocolate chips instead of cookies and cream kisses if unavailable
  • Red Oreos substituted with regular Oreos or other festive colors depending on the occasion
  • Boxed brownie mix for a quicker preparation, following the alternative mixing instructions
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder can be varied with different types of cocoa powder for a unique chocolate flavor

HOW TO STORE:

Cut brownies, stored in an airtight container or ziptop bag will last about 1-2 days at room temperature, if you leave them in the pan and cut as needed they will last a bit longer, up to 4 days.

You can also freeze this Red Velvet Brownie Recipe! I like to cut and individually wrap my pars in plastic wrap or tin foil and place in a freezer bag, they will keep for up to 3 months.

To defrost just let them sit on the countertop until they come to room temperature.

DANA’S TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • We make these homemade, but if you want to make them using a boxed mix just mix with 1/3 cup oil and 2 eggs and you should get the same texture.
  • If you can’t find cookies and cream kisses, any kisses will do, even the almond ones, white chocolate chips, or just top with cream cheese or buttercream frosting.
  • You can switch up your Oreos for fun festive colors, I know usually this time of year they have red Oreos out that you can use as well.
  • These can be frozen, see my tips above on how you can do that.
  • Add a little melted chocolate to the top for an extra layer of chocolatey goodness!
  • Easily double this recipe to make a 9″x 13″ pan, cooking time will vary.
