This didn’t help them much in the credibility stakes, now did it..?

It was odd flipping around the Internet there for a few minutes… Every other tweet coming in was contradicting the one before it. Matt Drudge got it right, but with its vast resources, CNN did not.

By the way, for “research purposes” I subscribe to a number of far-right newsletters and my inbox is being inundated with Tea party and GOP fundraising emails. Dozens have come in in the past 10 minutes.

The sad, sad story of Central Park’s abusive, anti-Semitic ‘Elmo’ impersonator

Jeesch, read the caption!

Today’s New York Times article about the paranoid weirdo who was last seen shouting anti-Semitic things wearing an “Elmo” costume in Central Park in a YouTube video that made the rounds earlier in the month, is one of the nuttier stories I’ve read in a while. Certainly the forlorn photograph of the man accompanying the article—his name is Adam Sandler—is the very definition of the word “pathetic.”

The police put him into an ambulance bound for Metropolitan Hospital Center, but he was not arrested. The video spread quicklyon the Internet, bringing out the dark humor, to some, of a cuddly children’s character engaging in a violent-sounding rant. Others thought it was just plain scary.

On Tuesday, Mr. Sandler, 48, of Ashland, Ore., removed his Elmo head from atop his own and tried to explain himself.

He said the doctors at Metropolitan told him he was “a little paranoid.” It was obvious from talking to him that he is troubled. But he told a lucid and detailed account of his life, and he told of his own dark past, one that might alarm parents whose children have posed with him. The tale he told underscored just how little is known about the men and women who dress as various children’s characters in tourist-clogged areas, looking for small tips. This tiny industry is unregulated.

The tale goes downhill quickly when it is revealed that Mr. Sandler once ran a p*rnographic website from Cambodia called “Welcome to the Rape Camp.” Officials there deported the future children’s entertainer in 1999 after an Associated Press article about his activities brought him to their attention.

Mr. Sandler said he went on to work at the New York office of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. The organization’s headquarters, where he was recognized by staff members who saw news accounts of the Elmo incident Sunday, said he had not been an employee, but had worked there from a temp agency.

But he lost that job. Then he had an idea.

“I saw how these Elmo guys were working in Times Square,” he said. These individuals are not sanctioned by theSesame StreetWorkshop, the nonprofit group that produces “Sesame Street,” “and we do not condone unauthorized representations of our characters,” a statement released Monday said.

Mr. Sandler bought an Elmo costume online for $300, he said, and when he started wearing it in April, he found it quickly paid for itself. Just Saturday, he said, he made $200.

He moved to Central Park when he felt Times Square was too saturated with Elmos.

At least two other outbursts in his Elmo costume have made it to the Internet. In one of them, he uses obscenities that send children running to their mothers. Mr. Sandler said the true number of his outbursts, as Elmo, was closer to 15. The police said he had no record of arrests. In none of the videos was Mr. Sandler physically abusive. It is unclear whether his rants as Elmo are illegal.

Just don’t let this Elmo tickle your kids…

Dollars and Dentists: Inside America’s Dental Care Crisis

Frontline’s Miles O’Brien joined forces with The Center for Public Integrity to produce this hard-hitting report that aired on PBS last night, investigating the shocking consequences of America’s broken dental care system.

One-third of Americans cannot afford basic dental care anymore. One-third! I found myself feeling something close to vertigo as I watched this. The tape recording of the dentists meeting in Alabama at about 27 minutes in, is chilling. Actual dental professionals meeting like mafioso trying to prevent affordable care for the most vulnerable people in our society! So cynical, it’s breathtaking.

On the eve of the country’s uninsured residents likely to be told to f*ck off and die by a conservative Supreme Court decision that will be announced tomorrow, this report is all the more vital. By focusing in specifically on the dentistry crisis in America, O’Brien and crew elegantly sidestep the confines of the political debate on lack of access to affordable medical care in this country, here highlighting the human toll from the accident of being born in the richest country the world has ever known.

Nothing short of tragic.

‘Family Guy’ creator Seth MacFarlane donates Carl Sagan papers to US Library of Congress

Seth MacFarlane, creator of “Family Guy,” has donated funds to the Library of Congress so it can acquire the personal papers of astronomer Carl Sagan, library officials announced today. Via Art Beat:

Mr. MacFarlane never owned Sagan’s papers, but he covered the undisclosed costs of donating them to the library. The papers filled more than 800 filing-cabinet drawers and include correspondence with other scientists, drafts of Mr. Sagan’s academic articles, as well as screenplay drafts for the movie “Contact,” which was based on Mr. Sagan’s novel. His grade-school report cards and a drawing he made as a child about the future of space exploration were also included. “All I did was write a check, but it’s something that was, to me, worth every penny,” MacFarlane told The Associated Press by phone from Los Angeles. “He’s a man whose life’s work should be accessible to everybody.”

Mr. MacFarlane said he watched “Cosmos” as a child and read all of Mr. Sagan’s books. “He was an enormous and profound influence in my life,” Mr. MacFarlane said. “He played an essential role — some would say the only role at the time — in bridging the gap between the academic community and the general public.”

MacFarlane is forgetting about Jonathan Miller and Joseph Campbell, but point taken.

Mr. MacFarlane met Mr. Sagan’s widow and collaborator, Ann Druyan, at an event a few years ago that brought together Hollywood screenwriters and directors with scientists. They agreed to collaborate on a follow-up to “Cosmos,” with Mr. MacFarlane serving as producer. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson will host the series, which is scheduled to begin production this fall.

Neil deGrasse Tyson taking up Carl Sagan’s mantle for a reboot of Cosmos produced by Seth MacFarlane? I’d watch that.

Someone alert reddit!

Speaking of Seth MacFarlane, his feature film debut, Ted, comes out later this week.

Below, an “edited for rednecks” version of Carl Sagan’s classic Cosmos TV miniseries from Family Guy.

Degenerate Cinema, the first in a series.

Here’s a real find courtesy of the whacked-out geniuses at Soiled Sinema: Mother’s Meat & Freud’s Flesh, written, directed, and starring Russian-Canadian Demetri Estdelacropolis. This 1984 assault on good taste reminds me of the anarchic films of The Kuchar Brothers, Jack Smith and John Waters - and it holds its own against those masters of mayhem.

Soiled Cinema’s Ty E describes Estdelacropolis’s brilliant freak fest thusly:

Mother’s Meat & Freud’s Flesh is a magnificent nonlinear mess that is comprised of eccentric slapdash scenes that mostly revolve around sexual deviancy, humorous ‘soul-searching’ existential isolationism, and pathetic personal crises. Despite its lack of plot, the film moves along quite fluidly and never wavers in the realm of vulgar artistic pretense, nor pseudo-intellectual banality, but it does feature a wealth of scatological imagery and themes, as well as a sordid buffet of bittersweet food-for-thought. Mother’s Meat & Freud’s Flesh is further accentuated by an exquisite soundtrack by the German New Wave group Trio. In both sight and sound, the film is ultimately a foremost work of avant-garde cinematic debauchery that features a number of quotable lines and ever-present replay value. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, it is nearly impossible to find a copy of Mother’s Meat & Freud’s Flesh on the internet, let alone in dvd form.

Well, Mother’s Meat & Freud’s Flesh is now available on the Internet so please take the time to enjoy this twisted mindf*cker.

For more on Mother’s Meat & Freud’s Flesh visit Soiled Sinema here. It’s a terrific website chock-full of articles on all kinds of obscure films, a veritable smorgasbord of cinematic mystery meat. Yum yum.

Haters hate ‘disgusting’ gay pride Oreos

All it took was Kraft Foods merely posting an illustration of its Oreo brand cookies in the “pride” colors of the gay rights movement on their Facebook page, and this brought out the wingnut hater bots.

Via the Washington Post

The post on Oreo’s Facebook page encouraged a high-volume debate rife with misspellings, indignation and hysterical punctuation.

One commenter: “this is absolutely disgusting!!! Vote with your dollar, I will NEVER buy anything Kraft Foods again.”

Another: “Don’t worry about them people boycotting you Oreo - I never bought a single cookie from you and now I will.”

Christians with no objection to same-sex marriage dunked the issue in Matthew 7 (“Judge not, that ye be not judged”). Christians opposing same-sex marriage cited Romans 1 (“Males committed indecent acts with males, and received within themselves the appropriate penalty for their perversion”).

And cookie fiends were more concerned with what the graphic means for their dessert options: “So like are we actually getting rainbow Oreos?”

That was honestly MY first thought. Fine print under the picture reads: “Made with creme colors that do not exist.” I was disappointed to find out that it was not happening. I wanted to make slu*tty Brownies with them.

Note to Kraft Foods, even a limited edition of the pride Oreos would make millions.

Considering that these newly-minted Oreo haters (whose number apparently include Jesus himself) were interested enough in f*ckin’ Oreo cookies to follow them on Facebook in the first place, I really can’t imagine that many of them will continue their goofball boycotts for very long.

Big win for Kraft Foods. Kudos to them for hiring marketing professionals who know which way the wind is blowing.

Somebody might want to explain to these bigoted asshats that there are some other LGBT-friendly companies who they might want to include in their boycotts. If you’re going to refuse to give your money to Kraft Foods, what about Levis, Nike and Google? What’s that you say? You’ll just use Bing as your search engine? Guess again…. And if it comes down to your computer, are you going to toss out your PCs and Apple products, too?

No iPhone for you, closet case!

The Elvis Mouse: The King cloned (sort of)

“It’s one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready now clone, cat, clone, but don’t you step on my Elvis Mouse… Oh you can do anything but stay offa my Elvis Mouse… “

Koby Barhad explains in the artist statement from his “All That I Am” installation at Design Interactions 2012 graduate show:

From a speck of hair to a mouse model.

A combination of three online services can make this project possible.
Hair samples of Elvis Presley, bought on eBay were sent to a gene sequencing lab to identify different behavioural traits (varied from sociability, athletic performance to obesity and addiction). Using this information, transgenic mice clones with parallel traits were produced. The genetically cloned models of Elvis (in this case) are tested in a collection of various contemporary scientific mouse model environments, simulating some of the significant biographical circ*mstances of his life.

Is it possible to quantify our life through a series of conditions and events? What are the aspects of life that are responsible in making us ourselves?
Does buying a pre-owned item gives one the legal right to another individual’s genetic data?
Can mouse models of ourselves help us prepare for possible futures or will it impose them on us?
Will we make different choices Re-living the same life?
Can a mouse be Elvis? What makes you believe it can be?

Further explication via We Make Money, Not Art:

In parallel to the works performed by these laboratories, Koby has been studying the scientific mouse model environments that have been used on lab mice over the past 100 years. The cages have been designed to study and manipulate psychological aspects of mice.

Koby then made his own cages. But his were intended to reconstruct some of the most influential moments in the life of Elvis. Each of these cages offers a specific environment that is designed to influence the psychology of the mouse and make it closer to Elvis’.

Some of the main themes that the designer identified as being influential in making Elvis are: his close relationship with his mother (and so the mouse is given a mouse companion), being the victim of bullying when he was a child (in this cage, the mouse is submitted to external stimuli that frightens it), the discovery of his talents, becoming a star (features a distorted mirror that makes the mouse appear bigger), the Graceland period (in every place the mouse pokes nose, it gets a positive reaction in the shape of food or toys and keeps filling the cage to the point making it anxious), the army, the death of mum, the divorce from Priscilla are events that are represented by a cage that functions as an isolation chamber. The last cage embodies the last three years of the life of Elvis, when he worked himself to death, that period is represented by a little treadmill at the top of the cages. The mouse would run, run, run and eventually fall down.

It’s unclear if the Elvis Mouse is only being fed fried banana and peanut butter sandwiches washed down with phenobarbital, when it groggily rings for its cook in the middle of the night.

Also unclear is whether or not there is a mouse equivalent to “Dr. Nick” Elvis’s legendary doctor feelgood, who prescribed the King over 10,000 doses of amphetamines, barbiturates, narcotics, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, laxatives and hormones in the final year of his life alone.
