Homemade Ranch Seasoning Mix

If you would prefer to make your own homemade dressing mix, here’s a simple recipe. All you need to do is mix together the following ingredients and store in a spice jar or small airtight container:

  • 2 teaspoons dried dill
  • 1 teaspoon dried chives
  • 2 tablespoons garlic salt (or half garlic powder, half salt)
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

How to Make Ranch Roasted Potatoes

  1. Mix potatoes and seasoning. Wash and cut potatoes into quarters, or 1 ½” chunks and place in a large bowl or a ziplock bag. Drizzle them with 3 tablespoons of avocado oil, toss to coat the potatoes evenly, then add the packet of Hidden Valley Ranch Seasoning mix and toss again until coated evenly.
  2. Arrange on a baking sheet. Coat a baking sheet with another 3 tablespoons of avocado oil, spreading it evenly. Remove potatoes from the ziplock bag and pour onto the baking sheet. Place the potatoes on an even layer on the baking sheet.
  3. Bake. In an oven preheated to 425 degrees, bake potatoes for about 20 minutes, or until potatoes begin to brown. Using a spatula, turn the potatoes and cook for another 10-15 minutes so the other side can brown and crisp.
  4. Serve. Once the potatoes are brown and golden, remove from the oven and season with additional salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these Ranch Potatoes ahead of time?

Since this roasted ranch potato recipe is best when eaten soon after they come out of the oven, we don’t recommend cooking them ahead of time. The one thing you could make ahead of time would be the homemade ranch seasoning mix. If you go that route, make a huge batch because it lasts forever!

What is the best temperature to roast potatoes?

We like to roast small potatoes like these at a high temperature. This way, the skin can get nice and crispy while the insides stay creamy and soft.

This recipe calls for preheating your oven to 425 degrees, which seems to be the sweet spot. If you set your oven below 350-375 degrees, they will never get crispy. But, anything over 450 degrees and you risk burning the outsides before the insides cook.

What kind of potatoes are best for roasting?

In this Ranch Roasted Potatoes recipe, we use red potatoes. They are great for roasting because they are thin-skinned, medium waxy and have a delicious earthy flavor. You can usually purchase them in bags at the grocery store, making them easy to shop for.

But, these aren’t the only potatoes that are great for roasting. Any of the following would be great substitutes in this recipe:

Yukon Gold potatoes - these are a great option because they aren’t too starchy or too waxy. Plus, they have an amazing creamy texture.
Fingerling potatoes - fingerling potatoes are nice and small. They are typically small enough that you may not even need to cut them.
Russet potatoes - these will need to be cut into 1-1 ½” cubes, but otherwise you can make the recipe exactly the same. We prefer to keep the skin on, even though Russet potatoes have thicker skin, as it makes for deliciously crispy potatoes.
