SHORE ANGLERPOLE POSITIONAFTER TREKKING across the tidal cause way connecting Sully Island to the mainland, I soon found Roy Tapper and Joe Arch fishing for smoothhounds beneath the famous Monkey Pole.The timing of my arrival could not have been better, as no sooner had I clambered down the steep headland to the rocks they were fishing, Roy reeled in the first fish of the session – not a hound, but a lively strap conger.My trek to Sully followed a phone call from Roy, who told me he’d just caught a bunch of smoothhounds there, the largest of which weighed more than 17lb. Conditions had been perfect, with an ideal tide and warm sunshine, and similar weather was forecast for the next day, so Roy was going back to Sully with Joe Arch.…4 min

SHORE ANGLERUSING THE CAUSEWAYSully is a tidal island, and for approximately two-and-a-half hours either side of low tide it is possible to safely gain access via a rocky causeway leading across from the mainland. On no account should any attempt be made to cross here when the tide is running. Many who have taken a chance have been caught out and needed rescuing by the RNLI. Others have drowned. An excellent new traffic light system located on the mainland clearly shows when it is and is not safe to cross, along with how much time you have. Study it before you cross.…1 min
